Last year I remember writing about the World’s Ugliest Dog 2016 (click here if you missed it) and some of the readers being repulsed by the winner’s appearance.  Well, it turns out we have a new champ! A few weeks ago a 3-year-old Neopolitan Mastiff named Martha was crowned the world’s ugliest dog 2017.  It was quite surprising for me to learn that this year’s winner is a Mastiff since previous winners have been small breed dogs.

The organizers of the annual contest said the competition isn’t about mocking the participants. Instead, it’s about celebrating the unique beauty of all dogs ―including those that may not be considered Westminster-worthy.
“We’re proud to celebrate all dogs and pets by showing that no matter their imperfections, they are adoptable, lovable and a great addition to any family,” Erin Post, CEO of the Sonoma-Marin Fair, told NPR. For almost 30 years, the World’s Ugliest Dog contest has been a crowd favorite at the fair. Judging from these pictures I think Sweepee, the 17-year-old Chinese Crested Chihuahua who formerly held the title should have been allowed to keep it. What are your thoughts? Would your dog be eligible to participate if there was such a contest here in Nigeria?
